This is one of the most common reasons for someone to try cannabis. Whether dealing with a specific injury, chronic pain, or just feeling the aches of aging, there are many different levels of treatment available. I am going to be separating this into 2 parts; first CBD's impacts, then THC's. This is in part because the legal climate is still shifting in favor of cannabis, though some areas only allow for CBD sales legally. Also, there is a common divide among patients if they are comfortable with the "high" induced by the use of THC. Now each of these attack pain differently, so let's take a closer look.
CBD based treatment will allow the user to get relief without the concern of impairment. This makes it easier for use throughout the day, and in public or at work. It is effective in two ways. CBD acts as an anti-inflammatory, easing pressure and relaxing the nervous system. It is also affects the body's ability to reabsorb anandamide, a natural body chemical for managing pain.
Adding THC to the mix only increases the ability to treat physical pain with cannabis. It is good to note that Indica strains are the ones that have a more physical effect, and are a better choice in this case. It basically works by preventing those pain signals sent by the nervous system from even reaching the brain. This reaction is also what induces the euphoric sensations, creating that "feel good" state. This is similar to how opioid based medications work, however THC has significantly less of the damaging side effects. It is also easier to dose appropriately.
As always, CBD and THC work best when used together. But what would be the best ways for administering your cannabis for physical pain? Now, this does vary from person to person, and it is important for you to find which works best for you personally. Topicals, such as lotions or salves, are a great way to treat a specific area. It will be fast acting, and last for a short burst of time; so it is more of an apply as needed option. Smoking also provides a quick effect, but it's stronger and lasts roughly 1-3 hours. It it important to know that its effects will also felt throughout the body, instead of just the intended area. The third, and strongest option would be edibles. They do take a while for you to feel them, at least an hour; then will provide an intense full body relief that can last around 4-8 hours. This can be very helpful when it comes to chronic pain, and getting a comfortable full night of sleep.
